Psychiatry Residency Program

The Western Behavioral Health Foundation was established to increase awareness of mental health initiatives, reduce the stigma associated with mental health, solicit donors to improve the patient experience, educate the public and providers, and help advance public policy. We have a full calendar of fundraising events, programs and projects, and community outreach and education to highlight. We are proud to share stories of successful treatment and lives lived with purpose on behalf of the extraordinary individuals and caregivers connected with the UPMC Western Behavioral Health network. Our services support the needs of every age group in many settings. Geographically, services extend into lower western New York, central Pennsylvania, and northwestern Maryland, with 527 licensed inpatient psychiatric and detox beds across nine UPMC hospitals. UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital in Oakland, Pennsylvania is the flagship of the UPMC Western Behavioral Health service line. The hospital provides a full complement of innovative psychiatric and addiction services. Nearly 11,500 multidisciplinary assessments are performed annually through our Psychiatric Emergency Services, with more than 4,700 inpatient admissions. As the top recipient of National Institutes of Health mental health grants nationally, UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is a leader in the field of behavioral health. UPMC Western Behavioral Health offers crisis services for Allegheny, Beaver, Erie, and Blair counties, with more than 177,000 calls, 16,000 walk-ins, and 19,000 dispatched mobile units to assist with crisis management. Residential facilities serve individuals of all ages with mental health challenges, intellectual disabilities, and substance use disorder. Outpatient locations offer convenient access to services, and UPMC Western Wellness offers short-term therapy located in pediatric and adult primary care, specialty practices, and in a dedicated stand-alone facility.
